SLED 10 : sax2 will not run and the graphical user interface does not start

This document (3651028) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) will not start. When attempting to reconfigure the GUI using sax2, it fails. In the /var/log/sax.log :
ERROR : Could not get screen for display 0:0

Resolution

If sax2 is unable to determine the amount of memory the video card is using, adjust the BIOS settings to bring it in-line with the card's video specifications.

For example, on some embedded NVidia video cards, the chip set utilizes 8 Mb of video memory. However, with embedded systems, that memory is not separate for the video card, and the BIOS must be instructed to deliver the entire 8 Mb to the video card. In this example, BIOS was currently set to 1 Mb.

Once the BIOS settings are corrected, reboot the computer and attempt to run SaX again to reconfigure the GUI.
