BrightStor ARCserve for NetWare 9x
Situation
Page Fault Processor Exception abends were seen when loading
BrightStor ARCserve for NetWare 9x. Below are excerpts of the
different abends seen:
1. ABEND: EIP in UNKNOWN memory area

Running process: TAPESVR CTP Process
Thread owned by NLM: TAPESVR.NLM

Running process: CHANGER INIT Process
Thread owned by NLM: CHANGER.NLM
1. ABEND: EIP in UNKNOWN memory area

Resolution
The root of the problem was that BrightStor ARCserve for
NetWare 9x software based tape cleaning support was enabled, and
the backup device being used also had a hardware level controlled
device cleaning feature that was enabled. This is not supported
by BrightStor ARCserve for NetWare 9x and is documented in
the Computer Associates knowledge base article TEC276817.
Disabling the hardware side cleaning feature resolved the abend.
Note that disabling the software cleaning support and leaving only the hardware cleaning enabled still resulted in an abend.

Additional Information
Additionally verify that the server is on the latest supported
BrightStor Arcserve for NetWare version and patch level and also
the latest available Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack and patch
level.
