Situation

NetWare timesync debug screen displays the follows error message:
NTP Peering packet xx.xx.xx.xx Discarding the packet.

Resolution

Some versions of Windows, such as XP or 2003, send NTP "peering" requests instead of "client" requests. A standard NTP server ignores such packets and discards them.

The problem is with the requester, not with the NetWare time provider, and can be resolved by issuing the following commands on the Windows computer:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:,0x8 /syncfromflags:MANUAL

The actual IP address of the NTP server or its host name must be entered instead of .

Then the following command can be used to immediately make the changes effective:

w32tm /config /update

Check with Microsoft for for accuracy of these commands, back out procedures, and any potential adverse affects from their use.
