Legato backup fails with a network connection failure

Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5
Legato Networker

Situation

Server A (in this case Solaris) backs up Server B (in this case NetWare 6.5 SP6).  The backup runs successfully but when it comes to write the index back to tape it intermittently loses connectivity between the two servers.  This leaves the files on tape OK but the index is useless.

Example from Legato error log:
--- Unsuccessful Save Sets ---
* uk-ac-test-2a:sys: SAVE.NLM: RPC error: RPC send operation failed. A network connection could not be established with the host.
* uk-ac-test-2a:sys: SAVE.NLM: shutdown failed
* uk-ac-test-2a:vol1: SAVE.NLM: RPC error: RPC send operation failed. A network connection could not be established with the host.
* uk-ac-test-2a:vol1: SAVE.NLM: RPC error: RPC send operation failed. A network connection could not be established with the host.
* uk-ac-test-2a:vol1: SAVE.NLM: shutdown failed

Resolution

The current workaround is to disable multiprocessing on  the NetWare server.

There is no permanent fix to this problem.  Novell and Legato/EMC support partner, Fujitsu-Siemens, started to investigate this but the customer was unable to continue troubleshooting and so the root cause was never established.

Any customers experiencing this problem should contact their EMC and Novell support providers, referencing this TID.

Additional Information

One customer has reported that they no longer have the issues described since they moved Legato from Solaris to Linux.
