Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 6
Secure Login Secret Store

Situation

Memory in both the VM and File System pools would become severely fragmented eventually resulting in cache memory allocation failures on the server console. Seg.nlm showed that the largest segment size in both pools was less than 2mg. The server had about 4 gig of memory installed. This server was using Secret Store to do secure logins. There were thousands of workstations hooked up to this server with many users as well.

Resolution

Ther is a setting for changing the cache refresh interval (in minutes)" which was set for 5 minutes. (Imanager\-- SecureLogin SSO\Manage SecureLogin SSO\-- Advanced Settings). This should be set to 6-8 hours for most environments. This setting dictates how often the local cache on the workstation should check in with eDir for changes/and updates. With that many workstations checking the ds cache on the server every 5 minutes caused the problem. After setting this to 8 hours, the problem was alleviated.
