Novell GroupWise Mobile Server
This will affect Most U.S. and Canadian Time Zones.
Situation
Starting in 2007, Daylight Saving Time will be extended by 4 weeks in most U.S. and Canadian time zones. Daylight Saving Time will begin the second Sunday in March (3 weeks earlier) and will end the first Sunday in November (1 week later). This change complies with a provision of the Energy Preservation Act of 2005 and affects all U.S. time zones that observe Daylight Saving Time (DST). Many Canadian provinces that share or border these time zones have also announced plans to adopt this change.
Daylight Saving Time transition rules are part of time zone definitions maintained by server and workstation operating systems. In addition, a set of GroupWise time zone definitions is maintained by ConsoleOne. These definitions need to be updated with the new transition rules. Calendaring applications, including GroupWise, rely on these definitions to correctly calculate and store appointment times.
Resolution
Exposure:In the event that all updates are not applied before March 11, it is currently believed that the only risk is that some calendar entries synchronized to devices will appear an hour off. This will be confirmed in the next two weeks.
Server:The GroupWise Mobile Server server software will require a patch to update its internal tables with the new DST rules. A prerequisite for this patch will be that the Windows Server operating system update, which is available from Microsoft, be applied first. Devices:The patch situation is different for each class of device.
Windows Mobile: Novell will be releasing an updated client for Windows Mobile devices. It will also install updates to the Windows Mobile operating system tables to accommodate the new DST rules. Users may also separately apply this OS update; refer to the Microsoft site above for more details.
Palm OS: Novell is working with Palm on final details of device support. Currently it appears that no upgrade of the GMS client will be required.
Symbian S60 Third Edition, and UIQ 3.0: No operating system or client upgrade appears to be necessary, as support for this change was built into this version of the operating system. This will be confirmed over the next two weeks.
Symbian Series 60 Second Edition, Series 80, and UIQ 2.1: No operating system updates will be available, and the device's calendar will be incorrect in the window between the new start and the old start dates. No Novell client upgrade is planned.
The upcoming version 2.0 release of Novell GroupWise Mobile Server will have all these patches included; its basic installation will handle all the aforementioned conditions.
