ZENworks Inventory will not initialize properly

Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Support Pack 1 - ZDM7 SP1 Inventory

Situation

When attempting to start inventory on the server, the following occurs:

ERROR: "[java: Class com.novell.zenworks.desktop.inventory.servercommon.ZENWorksInventory ServiceManager exited with status 1]"

Resolution

First we edited "SYS:\SYSTEM\STARTINV.NCF" so that the java results would be redirected to a file.

In this file, we appended ">sys:\inv.log" to the line that began with the word "java".

This caused the file "inv.log" to be created at the root of the SYS volume when the "STARTINV.NCF" file was executed.

This log file revealed that the server, which was configured to send its inventory data to a central root server was failing to connect to that server.

Upon examining the "Inventory Service" object for the root server, we discovered it was actually set to be a "Standalone server".

Once this server was changed to a "Root Server", the other server could connect and the java errors no longer occurred.
