Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (Linux based)
Situation
When installing OES2 as an add on to SLES 10 SP1, and using EVMS on the boot device (documentation found here), after bringing the server up and adding an NSS pool and volume on the boot device using iManager, upon next boot, an error pops even before Grub loads that "No operating system can be found" or "No boot partition can be found".
In this case, the /boot partition and possibly the MBR and / partition have been corrupted by the addition of the NSS pool and volume, so recovery is impractical at this point.
Resolution
Apply EVMS patch 2.5.5-24.52 or later (and reboot) BEFORE adding any NSS pools or volumes to the same device where /boot and / reside.
