Environment

Novell NetWare 5.1
Novell NetWare 6.0
SLP.NLM
SLPTCP.NLM

Situation

Servers using SLP DA discovery options 8 will not Multicast for a DA even if the DHCP server or SLP.CFG is not configured with DA information.
Multicast packets are not being transmitted by SLP server agent (SA) servers when SLP DA discovery options is set to 8.
Servers relying on multicast to contact the SLP directory agent (DA) will not be able to register server services.

Resolution

Configure the SLP.CFG file to include the DA IP address. Configure the SCOPE name in monitor under SERVER PARAMETERS/SERVICE LOCATION PROTOCOL/SLP Scope List option. If multicasting resolution is required then enable SLP DA discovery options 1 in monitor under SERVER PARAMETERS/SERVICE LOCATION PROTOCOL/SLP DA Discovery Options. Once that has been done, reboot the server for the changes to take effect

Additional Information

When option 8 "Disable Dynamic discovery when DHCP or static files are present" is enabled on the SA server the server will never use Multicast methods to contact the DA. In other words, with option 8 configured the server will not try to multicast (dynamic discovery) for the DA if the SLP.CFG file or DHCP server response is not present. Option 8 also behaves in the same fashion for NetWare 6.0"option 8 = Always disable dynamic discovery when DHCP or Static file bit(s) are set".
