Environment

Novell ZENworks for Desktops 4 - ZfD4
Novell ZEN for Desktops 3.2 - ZfD3.2
Faronics Technologies Deep Freeze Standard
Faronics Technologies Deep Freeze Professional
Microsoft Windows

Situation

Deep Freeze software does not save Policy or NAL Application changes to Workstation.
Policies are lost after reboot of Deep Freeze computer.

Resolution

In order to make permanent changes to the Deep Freeze-managed PCs, the administrator must use a password and "Thaw" the PC in order to stop the roll-back feature. In the case of Policies delivered by ZENworks, the best practice may be to apply them before the software is installed, or to "Thaw" the workstations temporarily to apply Policies or other changes.
***Note: This will not work if multiple users are logging in to the same workstation.

Additional Information

Deep Freeze software from Faronics Technologies is a utility program designed to record the changes to a workstation and return it to a previous state once the PC is rebooted. Typical uses are in school or computer lab settings where users are not trusted, and administrators want to erase the changes those users make. When the PC is rebooted, all new applications and other changes are deleted from the PC. This includes new Policies if they are applied after the Deep Freeze software is active.
If Policies are delivered and applied while the Deep Freeze is monitoring, or if NAL delivers Applications while it is on, they will all be lost on the next reboot.
