Environment

ZENworks Endpoint Security Management 3.5
Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Windows XP Professional Support Pack 2
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Windows XP Professional Support Pack 1
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000

Situation

What can ZENworks Endpoint Security Management do to control 1xEVDO and Mobile WiMax Connectivity?

Resolution

EVDO devices in the system generally enter the system as a "modem” device (company and OS choice) so our controls can be the following:
  • White list of adapters
  • Disable Modem (EVDO) when wired
  • Disable Modem (EVDO) entirely (or by location)
  • Prevent adapter bridging to the EVDO device
  • Applying a firewall to the EVDO devices network traffic
  • Only one network device connected at a time (i.e. only one wired, modem, WiFi, EVDO, etc connection at a time)
  • VPN Enforcement
Mobile WiMAX is a technology and devices that support this technology enter the system as a modem or wireless card. Many of them have a "flip flop” driver that toggles between a modem-like device (for 3G connections) and a WiFi device (for 802.11 connections). They would have all the options listed in #1 above, plus any of the current features in the product related to 802.11 wireless controls. Namely:
  • SSID filtering (white list or black list)
  • White list of adapters
  • Minimum WiFi security enforcement
  • Disable WiFi when Wired
  • Disable WiFi entirely (or by location)
  • Prevent adapter bridging to the WiMAX device
  • WEP key management
