Environment

Novell GroupWise 5.1.
Novell GroupWise 5.2.
Novell GroupWise 5.5.
Novell GroupWise 6.
Novell GroupWise 6.5
Novell GroupWise 7
GroupWise Post Office Agent.
Novell NetWare 4.11
ATM network with 3 "V-LANs" (each is a different network segment).
Each V-LAN (virtual LAN) is assigned a different IP address.
One NIC card in server with 3 IP addresses bound to it (one for each V-LAN).

Situation

Mulitple post offices.
Each Post Office Agent is configured in NetWare Administrator to use a unique IP address .
First Post Office Agent loads correctly.
Error message received loading second Post Office Agent on the same server.
Error: "Listen port is already in use".
Error: "Error verifying that the port is usable. 8555".
Error: "Error starting TCP/IP Agent: 8555".

Resolution

Configure each Post Office Agent startup file with the /port-[port number] to use the server's default IP address but use different ports for each Post Office Agent. GroupWise clients will need to be configured to point to the IP address and the port # which corresponds with their Post Office
Turning on IP packet forwarding in the IP stack will enable packets (traffic) from one network segment of the server to travel to other network segments by having the server route the packets--basically the server would act like a router to route IP packets between network segments of which the server is physically connected. SeeTID 2938112POA using mutiple NIC cards.

UPDATE: For GroupWise 6.0 and later, you can configure the startup files so that each POA will load using a specific IP address. See https://www.novell.com/documentation/gw7/gw7_admin/data/ak8h74f.html#bw9000y for more information (covers GroupWise 7, but the same information is applicable to 6.5)

Additional Information

By default, the GroupWise agents bind to the server's default IP address. For GroupWise 5.5 Enhancement Pack (and earlier versions of GroupWise) it is not possible to bind an agent to one IP address and another to a different address. See KB 2927788 GroupWise Agents and Multiple NICs
