Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 OES2

Situation

Smdrd would have a status of unused when doing rcnovell-smdrd status. This means that smdrd failed to load or was loaded from a different directory than the default /opt/novell/sms/bin directory. The tsafs would get an INTERNAL TSA ERROR when loading. This information was echoed to the /var/log/messages file. Other errors were FAILED TO COMMUNICATE WITH SMDR when the tsafs was loading. This was a new install of OES2 Linux. There were no errors during the install. We unloaded the smdrd.nlm with rcnovell-smdrd stop and then unloaded the tsafs with /opt/novell/sms/bin/./smsconfig -l tsafs. We then were able to load smdrd by itself with
rcnovell-smdrd start
tsafs would still get the internal errors however when trying to load with /opt/novell/sms/bin./smsconfig -l tsafs.

Resolution

We unloaded smdrd again and reinstalled the sms rpm from the shipping cd in Yast. We renamed the tsafs./etc/opt/novell/sms/tsafs.conf file so that the reinstall of the rpm would recreate it. After this both smdrd and tsafs loaded ok. Possibly there was some corruption in the tsafs.conf file as it had been modified by the customer. The syntax was correct but there could have been things like carriage returns in the file that were causing tsafs to abort loading. We renamed the tsafs.conf file on a functioning server and were able to reproduce the same internal tsa errors when loading tsafs.
