Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
Novell ZENworks 7.2 Linux Management - ZLM7.2

Situation

ZLM 7.2 installed to a SLES 10 single server tree and was working with many bundles created and working after many hours of work.
eDirectory becomes corrupt for unknown reasons.
No backup of eDir had been done.
eDir could not be fixed nor recovered.
The ZLM Object Store is lost.
ZLM backup can save the Data Store.

Resolution

Re-install ZLM 7.2. This will install eDir again. Re-building the ZLM environment and configuration will be necessary.

This is an inherent risk with single server trees. Backing up / archiving eDir after the ZLM install and at strategic intervals, frequently when configuration changes are dynamic and labor intensive, is highly recommended. Adding other servers to the tree adds replicas and increases recovery options while minimizing risks of a lost Object Store.

Additional Information

Re-installing ZLM 7.2 does install a new eDir database but it has no information from the previous install in the Object Store. The backup of the Data Store can be restored, but there is no utility to sync the Data Store to the Object Store (reverse sync of a restored Object Store sync'n to the Data Store). A Request for Enhancement (RFE) has been submitted for a utility to sync the Data Store to the Object Store for this situation. This specific situation can be avoided so it is not likely the utility will be done. If other circumstances and business needs arise that this utility would be useful, provide feedback to this TID and the data can be added to the RFE.
