Delay accessing SAMBA shares via the favorites menu

This document (3188420) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Suse Linux Open Enterprise Server 9
samba-3.0.2.0b-3.4

Situation

Accessing a SAMBA share from the favorites menu after 20-30 minutes of nonuse takes 20 seconds or more to open the share.

Resolution

The smbd server is trying to talk to the cups daemon on a machine that doesn't have any printers installed.
In the [Global] section of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file change the following:
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
to read :
printing = bsd
printcap name = /etc/printcap
and comment out the line:
cups options = raw
