Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 2

Situation

The SYS:SYSTEM directory had a rename to SYS:SYSTEM~1. The source of the rename is unknown, however, the system could not properly boot as the search path is SYS:SYSTEM, not SYS:SYSTEM~1. The SYSTEM directory cannot be renamed with the server fully up and running, even if it has a wrong name.

Resolution

You will need a DOS emulator to rename the directory such as JCMD or Netbasic
-Down the server
-Bring the server up with the -ns -na switches.
-Run STARTUP.NCF
-Run LOADSTAGE 1
-Run LOADSTAGE 2
-Delete the search path to the system directory The system directory is probably search 1. The search number can be verified by entering SEARCH at the command prompt. The command is SEARCH DEL 1.
-Use your favorite DOS emulation program to rename the the mis-named system directory to SYSTEM.
-restart the server normally
