Situation
On a NetWare based cluster that has originally been installed as
NetWare 6.5SP3 the customer has configured compression on some of
his NSS volumes.
After upgrading the existing cluster to Support Pack 5 code base, and adding additional Linux based Open Enterprise Server nodes to the cluster, we have found that one out of many NSS volumes was frequently reporting 'Compression Upgrade failed' messages to the NetWare logger screen when the resource was active on a NetWare based cluster node, and reported 'Compression Upgrade failed' messages to '/var/log/messages' every 7 minutes, when the resource was located on a Linux based cluster node.

Resolution
We have not been able to duplicate this during in-house testing,
also engineering has not been able to find a root cause of the
problem in a provided NSS scan from the problem pool.
The possible compression code paths in use with NSS compression have been reviewed and more extensive error reporting has been added to each code-path, also the upgrade attempts have now changed to once per activate of a non-upgraded compressed volume.
