Situation
Sometimes the Novell NetWare Client will hold a file open, even if
you are trying to save it, because the client is trying to optimize
network performance by caching the working files locally, and then
moving the file to the server when the network traffic is at an
ebb. This will result in the file name being changed to, where the original file name was. For example, bracket.ipt will end up
being called bracket.NewVer.ipt.
Resolution
There is a user selectable parameter that can be set to not
cache locally and to commit to the server when the application
requests for a save. Here's how to do this:
- Look for the Novell "N" in the task bar area of the computer screen
- Right click on the "N" to get to properties
- Click on Properties
- Click on the Advanced Settings tab
- Select File Caching and select Off from the drop down box
- Select File Commit and select On from the drop down box
This will require a system reboot. When all of this is
done, Inventor and AutoCAD will save files to a NetWare server
without leaving behind a copy of the old file in the form of
