Environment

Novell Identity Manager 3.0
Novell Identity Manager 3.5
Novell Identity Manager - Remote Loader

Situation

Using Identity Manager's tracing options on the IDM engine or Remote Loader allows you to write traces directly to a file without using the dstrace module on the engine side or copying from a window on the Remote Loader side. There is an option to set the maximum trace file size so that the trace does not easily consume all available disk space. When doing this and setting the maximum size to ten megabytes the file never reaches that size but there are several small files in that location.

Resolution

The engine and Remote Loader both respect the maximum trace size setting and use functionality similar to logrotate to rotate older files out. In doing so there is no single file which holds the maximum trace size in data but instead ten smaller files hold one tenth of that size. The older files are renamed with a higher number until they are eventually removed. This allows for data to be continuously up to date and, when the maximum size is reached, all data are not lost to start writing the file over again.

The maximum file size limit for the individual files being used to store this tracing information is dependent on the filesystem. See filesystem specifications for details.
