Environment

Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS)

The issue can be seen whenever a user needs to change their password.

Situation

FFFFFA78 translates to a NICI -1416 error. This error occurs when there is a problem decrypting a password attribute on a user.

In this case, the password history attribute is causing the problem. This can be caused a treekey inconsistency or lost treekey.

Resolution

There are two ways to solve this issue.

1. Apply NMAS 3.2.0 (or greater) found at https://download.novell.com . A fix in this patch allows for Password History values that can't be decrypted (because of treekey inconsistencies or lost treekey) to be removed during a password change.

OR

2. Use the RMUPWD utility to remove the password attributes for the given user having the problem. (See readme for RMUPWD for examples on how to remove the password attributes)
