Exchange gateway shuts down immediately after starting.

Newly installed and configured gateway, no problems during an installation or a configuration.
Gateway starts fine, however, it shuts down immediately.
No 000.prc directory created under the gateway directory.
No gateway log file created.
No event recorded in the Application part of Event Viewer.


The MS Windows 2003 server and Exchange 2003 were installed in English, however, few regional settings were set into different than English US language. The gateway was hard coded for English US language that conflicted with the Regional Settings configuration of the Windows server.
Add /l-us startup switch for the gateway either in the startup configuration file or in a shortcut / service startup parameter.
Alternatively set following in English US in the Regional settings:
  1. Regional Options - Standards and formats + Location
  2. Languages | Details -> Settings tab | Default input language.
  3. Advance | Language for non-Unicode programs + Default user account settings (activate the check-box Apply all settings to the current user account ...
  4. Restart the Windows server.

This has been fixed and is provided in any newer gateway build after the January 2007.
