Environment

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8
Novell SUSE Linux Desktop 1.0
Novell SUSE Linux Standard Server 8
Novell Open Enterprise Server (Linux based)
Novell Linux Desktop 9

Situation

Waiting for device to appear
Unable to find root device after reboot

Fresh install of Linux
(optionally) using 3rd party Driver

Resolution

If the installation source has any service packs integrated into it, make sure you're using the boot CD corresponding to the service pack of the install source.

If you are using a 3rd party driver, make sure the driver is intended to work with the specific kernel version you are using.  A table of support packs and kernel versions is available at Table of Kernel versions for SLES 8, SLES9, and OES

Some 3rd party driver providers specify the exact kernel versions the driver will work with, while others simply indicate a support pack.

Additional Information

If you are using a 3rd party driver, before applying any kernel patches or updates, make sure the driver you have will work with the newer kernel.
