Environment

Novell eDirectory 8.7.3 for All Platforms
Novell eDirectory 8.7.3.8 for All Platforms
Novell eDirectory 8.7.3.8 for NetWare 6.5

Situation

Synchronization fails and reports "Skulk Schema failed, -731 (0xffffd25)"
Unable to extend the schema with new modifications: error 731

Resolution

The symptoms indicate that the Schema Sync Lock attribute in the server has become corrupt for some reason. This attribute is used to mark that Schema Synchronization is in progress. An abend or power outage at the moment that the attribute is being created or deleted could be linked to the problem.
To verify if this is indeed the problem, launch iMonitor and click on the "Agent Configuration" link. The page presents the information about your current server. In the "Connection Information" section look for the Schema Root entry. There should be a link with an 8 digit hex number to the right of it. Click on it, it will display the attributes defined in the Schema Root object. If  there is an entry called "SchemaResetLock" then you are affected by this problem.
For the moment, the only way to resolve this issue is through a dial in from Novell Technical Services. If you have a Support Contract with Novell you can log a Service Request and have this issue fixed by a technician.
