Situation
Giving end users the ability to manage their own passwords through
a "self service" portal was first introduced with iManager 2.0.2
and involved installing a portal servlet on the iManager 2.0.2
server. This gave the end user the ability to reset their
password or retrieve a password hint using a series of
challenge/response questions if they had forgotten their
password. As of December 31, 2005, iManager 2.0.2 is no
longer supported. However, although iManager 2.0.2 is not
officially supported, the password management self service portal
servlet that runs on top of the portal that iManager 2.0.2 uses is
supported on a VERY LIMITED basis. For FULL support, it
is recommend to use one of the fully supported solutions listed
below.
Resolution
There are currently three options available for implementing
password self service in a Novell environment.
1. The latest Novell Client for Windows 2000/XP/2003 includes and installs the Challenge/Response Client by default which also includes a forgotten password interface.
2. Novell Virtual Office 1.5 is currently available for Novell NetWare 6.5, NetWare Open Enterprise Server (OES) and Suse Linux OES and can be configured as a password self service portal.
3. The Identity Manager User Application solution included with Novell Identity Manager (IDM) 3 includes a password self service portal. You must have purchased IDM 3.x in order to use this solution.
NOTE: The configuration of Challenge/Response questions is all done through iManager. You can use Novell iManager 2.5 or greater with the Universal Password plug-ins (Shows up as the"Passwords" role from within iManager) to create and manage Challenge Sets for any given Universal Password Policy.
