Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 5
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 4
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 3
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 2
Novell Cluster Services 1.8
Novell Cluster Services 1.7

Situation

A cluster resource goes comatose when attempting to bring it online.
The pool and volume activate manually with Cluster Services unloaded.

Resolution

The load script for each volume resource has a volume ID listed as VOLID = . Make sure each resource has a unique volume ID, and that they are less than 256. When bringing a resource online, it will go comatose if its volume ID is already in use by another resource.

The load script for each resource also contains an IP address. Make sure the address is not in use by any other device or resource on the network. A ping of the address should not get a reply when the resource is offline or comatose.

Additional Information

"Comatose" means that one or more commands in the load or unload script failed. The following can help to find the problem:
  1. Take the resource offline and try activating the pool and volume manually using these commands: "nss /poolactivate=" and "mount "
  2. Take the resource offline and try loading each line of the load script on the console. Watch the console and logger screen for errors to see which line is failing.
