Environment

Products:
Novell ZENworks Desktop Management 6.5 Support Pack 2 - ZDM6.5 SP2 Imaging
Novell ZENworks Desktop Management 7 - ZDM7 Imaging
Configuration:
IBM ThinkCentre S50
Lite-on CD-ROM Drive Model LTN-486S (Shipping with some Dell models)

Situation

CD-ROM Drive is accessed everytime an imaging command is done at the bash prompt (even if the drive has no disc in it).
6-10 second delay when imaging is detecting hardware.

Resolution

This is currently working as designed. The ZENworks imaging engine does a scan for hardware detection which causes the command to be delayed.
ZENworks Imaging in ZDM 6.5 SP2 and ZDM 7 (and higher) uses SUSE 9 SP3 as the operating system. The imaging engine calls the SUSE library of libhd to detect storage devices. That library causes a 6-10 second delay on some models of CD-ROM drives. That time delay can be decreased on some drives by having a disc in the CD-ROM drive.

Additional Information

ZENworks Imaging in ZDM 6.5 SP1 (and lower) did not use the SUSE Operating System and doesn't exhibit this behavior
