Fact

Novell ZENworks Imaging

Novell ZENworks PreBoot Services (PXE)

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

Symptom

PXE Server leaves ports 524 and 998 open which eventually causes RPC failures

PXE Transaction Server leaves ports 524 and 998 in a "Close_wait" state which eventually uses up all available RPC connections

PXE Server causes networking on a Windows Server to fail due to a large number of open ports

Cause

Caused by a very unique combination of services running on several servers throughout the tree, which in turn didn't close connections on 524 and 998 to the PXE Transaction Server.

Fix

Workaround - Stop and restart two PXE Windows services, namely, "ZENworks PreBoot Transaction Server" and "ZENworks Preboot RPC Port Mapper".

Fixed in two ZENworks Imaging Server files, ZENPXE.DLL Dated 10 August 2004 or in zfd65u2.exe or newer, and ZENIMGDS.DLML Dated 12 August 2004 or in zfd65u2.exe or newer newer found at Novell Support
