Fixed with NWFS.SYS dated 19 November 2001or later, written for the 4.81 client version. As of this writing this patch can be found in the download file 274666.exe.
Another cause could be Virus Software holding on to files prior to releasing them. In one scenario the problem was with Norton Antivirus 2001. Without the Antivirus loaded the PC took approx. 14 sec to open the file. With Norton loaded it took between 2 to 4 min.
Create a test workstation and apply only the OS (i.e. Win95/98 or WinNT/2000) and perform a "vanilla" install of the Novell Client. Apply the software apps one at a time until the problem reoccurs. This will isolate which application is causing the problem and can then be addressed accordingly.
